If your dentist has referred you to a periodontist, you may be in need of some further examination and treatment for gum and periodontal disease. This can sound more daunting than it is, but the good news is your dentist is likely referring you to ensure you receive the best care possible.

A tooth is attached to the jaw through periodontal ligaments and they are held securely together by gum tissue. Inflammation and infection can invade these tissues and can manifest into a serious disease. A periodontist is a dentist that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and maintenance of gum and periodontal disease. Since the gums are heavily infiltrated with blood supply, a disease in these tissues may possibly have harmful effects on other organs of our body.

When it comes to oral health, there are many unique specialties that require specific attention from a trained and licensed individual.  Severe gum disease requires attention from someone who can understand the implications of poor gum health.

There are four main reasons you may have been referred to a periodontist:

  1. Your dentist suspects you may have an active generalized periodontal disease that requires specific attention and therapy.
  2. Your teeth-supporting tissues may require a more detailed assessment from an expert to offer procedures to treat these areas.
  3. Periodontists are great at conducting surgeries in the mouth. They are excellent in placing implants and bone grafts, and they are the best in placing gum grafts to cover root surfaces from gum recession.
  4. Periodontists can do other surgical procedures like frenectomy, treating tongue-tie, and crown lengthening.

What to expect from a first visit

During your first visit, your periodontist will review your medical and dental history to understand your personal needs. It is important for your periodontist to know which medications (if any) you are taking or any conditions you are currently receiving treatment for, such as heart disease, diabetes, and pregnancy.

If you have been referred to a periodontist, your dentist is trying to find for you the best avenue for support. Your dentist is introducing you to a professional who has the training and tools to provide you with the best care possible. The periodontist will communicate very well with your dentist, they will write up a detailed report back and give their recommendation for the proper monitoring and maintenance protocol of the therapy. They play an integral role in your dental team.
